DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION STUDIES
The BA Communication Studies program aims at producing highly-qualified Communication graduates who can provide cutting-edge solutions through research at the University College and the working place to the evolving and complex competitive business environment; and who are passionate about the development of their local communities, and are ready to apply themselves to highlighting and promoting local issues. The program further aims at inculcating into its graduates the moral and socially-desirable values of honesty, probity, integrity, excellence, creative and critical thinking, perseverance and fear of the Almighty God (Allah). The growing importance of communication in Ghana with the proliferation of privately owned radio and television stations and with businesses forced to operate in ever changing local environment and a globalized world has informed IUCG’s offering of a program that will equip professionals with adequate knowledge, skills, and attitudinal preparedness to effectively contribute in making the media the real fourth estate of the realm.IUCG’s intentions therefore have been to produce professionally qualified non-elitist graduates who are expected; (i) to be knowledgeable in the basic theories and concepts in Communication Studies, and to apply such knowledge to the demands of rural communities, Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), the private and traditional sectors of Ghana, and the global setting. (ii) to apply creativity, analytical and critical thinking, innovative and problem-solving skills with the right temperament in managing the media environment in deprived and marginalized societies in Ghana; and (iii) to develop the virtues of consensus building, religious and ethnic tolerance for peaceful co-existence, and to be professionally and ethically upright in upholding the good virtues of the media practice. By initiating a program of study in this critical area, the IUCG envisages the production of graduates who are well qualified and capable of handling their assignments professionally. In addition, IUCG graduates are also well equipped to favourably compete with graduates of other universities in the job market for positions in advertising, public relations and, especially, media reporting in the rural and disadvantaged communities. The program has, been designed to be highly integrated, incorporating allied disciplines, especially, those of African studies and liberal arts studies currently being pursued at IUCG. By this arrangement, graduates from IUCG’s Department of Communication Studies would not only be ready for the media market, but will also have positioned themselves well enough for engagements in professions such as teaching, banking, civil service, administration, the foreign service, security services, and the private sector.
