Naa Bapra Mion Lana Pays Historic Visit to Islamic University College, Ghana

The Islamic University College, Ghana (IUCG), on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, received a high-powered delegation from the Mion Traditional Area of the Dagbon Kingdom in the Northern Region, led by His Eminence, Mion Lana Alhassan Mahama.

The visit, which marked a historic moment in the university’s 25-year existence, was the first ever by a traditional ruler from the Mion Traditional Area.

The President of IUCG, Dr. Haadi Kamal Ezzat, together with members of the university community, warmly welcomed the Mion Lana and his entourage, which included the Zangonaa of Botwe, Alhaj Abdul Qadr, and Alhaj Seebaway Iddris.

The delegation was introduced by the Secretary to the Mion Lana, Mohammed Baba.

In his welcome address, Dr. Ezzat expressed profound gratitude to the Mion Lana for honouring the university with his presence.

“Coming from afar to visit IUCG shows how close we are to one another.

“Your visit will strengthen the relationship between the university and the northern sector and bring more development to IUCG,” he said.

He noted that a significant number of IUCG graduates hail from the northern regions and revealed plans to establish a campus in the North to enhance access to higher education.

Dr. Ezzat also conveyed greetings from the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who expressed interest in inviting the Mion Lana to IUCG’s upcoming graduation ceremony.

On behalf of Dr. Abbasi, President of Al-Mustapha International University in Iran, Dr. Ezzat presented a special gift to the Mion Lana.

He further announced that any student presenting a recommendation letter from the Mion Lana would receive a fee waiver.

Delivering the Mion Lana’s address on his behalf, Secretary Mohammed Baba highlighted the cultural and religious ties between the Dagbon people and the broader Muslim community, noting the Damba Festival, which commemorates the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The Mion Lana emphasized the importance of education, citing the Prophet’s encouragement for the pursuit of knowledge.

He appealed to IUCG to establish a branch of the university in the Northern Region, assuring that such an initiative would be well supported and maintained by the people of Dagbon.

During the visit, IUCG and the Dagbon Traditional Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in education and cultural exchange.

Dr. Seebaway Zakaria, a member of IUCG’s faculty, urged the Mion Lana and his delegation to engage Members of Parliament from the Dagbon area to sponsor students to the university.

This call followed the IUCG President’s pledge to offer scholarships and expand the institution’s reach to the North.

Dr. Zakaria commended the continued support of the Iranian partners in advancing IUCG’s mission, noting that their collaboration has been pivotal in the university’s growth.

The visit concluded with expressions of mutual respect and commitment to building lasting partnerships between the Islamic University College, Ghana, and the Mion Traditional Area of the Dagbon Kingdom.
